今週も、609は元気にあちこちのカメラに姿を現している。

ブルックスフォールズの上で跳ね上がるサーモンを捕り、ナクネク湖では水に潜る。

中洲でくつろぎながら、ふとカメラに視線を合わせる姿もあった。

なかでも興味深かったのは、609と、今は別々に生きている母クマ909、そして今年生まれた二頭の仔グマとの接近だった。

909が609を追い払うかと思ったが、そのまま静かに通り過ぎた。

ところが仔グマたちは、ほんの少し609の後を追った。

二つの小さな影は、すぐに向きを変え、909の方へ走って戻っていった。

一瞬、609を母クマ909と間違えたようにも見えた。

609を育てていた頃と比べると、909にはずいぶん落ち着きが増したように見える。

609を産んだ時、909はまだ5歳だった。

滝の上では、母909の姉妹である910や、その娘620と同席する場面もあった。

910は、609が909から親離れした後、自分の娘620とともに彼女を二シーズン家族として迎え入れた。

通常より長く続いた、異例の養子縁組だった。

それでも今、910は滝の上から609を追い払う。

609は空いた場所とタイミングを見ながら位置を取り、そこに立つことさえできれば、跳ね上がるサーモンを見事にとらえる。

中洲で立ち止まり、風の匂いを嗅いでいるように見えた姿だ。

What was especially interesting was an encounter between 609, her mother 909—who now lives separately from her—and 909’s two cubs born this year.

I thought 909 might drive 609 away, but instead she passed by quietly.

Then, for a brief moment, the cubs followed behind 609.

The two small shadows quickly turned around and ran back toward 909.

For an instant, it almost looked as though they had mistaken 609 for their mother.

Compared with the time when she was raising 609, 909 now seems much calmer.

When she gave birth to 609, 909 was still only five years old.

Above the falls, 609 was also seen together with 910, the sister of her mother 909, and 620, 910’s daughter.

After 609 separated from 909, 910 raised her alongside her own daughter 620 for two seasons.

It was an unusual adoption that lasted longer than is typical.

Even so, 910 now drives 609 away from the top of the falls.

609 watches for an open spot and the right moment to take her position there, and if she can secure a place, she catches the leaping salmon with remarkable skill.
