Brooks Camp

AKDT, September 21: snow fell on Dumpling Mountain.

Usually, snow does not fall until well into October, but the seasons are moving quickly this year. Someone who visited in August also said that autumn had come early. And 609 Bean has not appeared on camera since September 12.

Then, on September 20, sad news arrived. The remains of a bear had been found in the lakeshore woods near Brooks Camp. The bear is estimated to have died around September 16 or 17, and 32 Chunk now has possession of the remains. The ranger who found the bear does not believe Chunk killed it.

No one knows whether the bear was male or female. What we do know is that it was “not large, but not small either.” As long as Chunk remains nearby, it is difficult for people to approach and investigate. Winter will soon come to the river, and the rangers will leave. It is thought unlikely that the bear will be identified.

Because of its size, and because Bean has not been seen recently, people began to worry that it might be her. My heart began to race too.

Stay calm. Stay calm…

There is not enough information to connect these remains to Bean. By the most recent estimate, more than 2,000 brown bears live in Katmai. From late summer into autumn, bears we do not normally see at Brooks River pass through this area. The bear who died may have been one we did not know.

Of course, that does not mean it would be all right if the bear was one we did not know.

But what if I look at it from Bean’s side? Until I heard the news, I had not found her absence since September 12 particularly puzzling. Her movements since August had been a little different from usual.

Usually, she appears at Brooks River in spring and lives there almost continuously until she leaves to prepare for hibernation in October. She shows up on one of the fixed cameras nearly every day. This year, though, she did not appear from August 15 through September 4. I thought she had gone on a walkabout, as many bears do, traveling to tributaries in search of salmon.

For a week after she returned, she appeared on camera every day and seemed well. Then she disappeared again. The salmon seem to be moving through the river a little differently than usual this year. There were also many mothers with cubs, and the river was crowded with bears. I thought she might have left Brooks River a little early and begun preparing for hibernation.

Bear 910, the aunt who looked after her, was last seen on camera just one day before Bean. Perhaps they know another good place to fish. Perhaps Bean has returned to a comfortable place she found during her walkabout. Perhaps she is filling her belly with salmon and berries, slowly beginning to prepare for hibernation…

That was how I pictured her heading into winter.

I do not know whether she will appear on the Brooks River cameras again this season. Still, I want to wait for her, believing I will see her again next spring.

Until then, I will keep painting the Bean I love as she appeared to us this season.
