909の子グマたち | English translation below

最近、彼女、609はほとんど滝には現れない。

ナクネク湖から橋の下あたりでダイビング。あるいは滝の少し下流、浅瀬のあたりでシュノーケリング。

サーモンの恵みは、彼女を裏切ることなく順調だ。

今回の絵は番外編である。

私が609以外のクマを主人公に描いたのは、これが初めてだ。

彼女の母である909が、この春に連れていた二頭の子グマ。

最初に行方不明になった一頭に続いて、7月29日、残っていた一頭の命も失われた。

自身も子育て中である806に捕食されたのだ。

子グマが命を落とすことは珍しいことではない。

むしろ、生き残る方が難しい。

命が潰える瞬間を、カメラが拾ってしまうこともある。

けれども、この出来事は私の中で何かを変えた。

伝えたいことはたくさんある。

けれど、はっきりと言葉にするには、私には正確な知識が足りない。

ただ一つ言いたいのは、909は誤解されているのではないか、ということだ。

今年は、5頭もの母クマが三つ子を連れてきている。

この先失われる小さな命もあるだろう。

ブラウンベアの生存率は40%と言われている。

けれども今回のことには非常にショックを受けた。

この小さな二つの命のことを、いつまでも忘れることはないだろう。

This painting is a departure from my usual work.

It is the first time I have made a bear other than 609 the central subject of a painting.

These are the two cubs her mother, 909, brought with her this spring.

After the first cub disappeared, the remaining cub also lost its life on July 29.

It was consumed by 806, who was herself raising cubs.

It is not unusual for bear cubs to lose their lives.

In fact, surviving is the harder outcome.

Sometimes the cameras capture the very moment a life comes to an end.

And yet, this event changed something in me.

There is so much I want to say.

But I do not have enough precise knowledge to put it clearly into words.

There is only one thing I want to say: I wonder whether 909 has been misunderstood.

This year, as many as five mother bears have arrived with triplets.

Some of these young lives may be lost in the months ahead.

The survival rate of brown bear cubs is said to be around 40 percent.

Even so, I was deeply shocked by what happened this time.

I do not think I will ever forget these two small lives.
